Flying Foxes – Fly Out

June 11 @ 4:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Join us to learn more about these heroes of the night and see the colony wake up at dusk before flying out to pollinate our native forests.

Our fellow neighbors of the sky play a fundamental ecological role – they make forests, and in doing so support all the creatures that call the forest home. Yet, few animals are more misunderstood. As part of Gold Coast Green Week 2021, you have the unique opportunity to learn about the many bats around our city, while watching the colony wake up and get ready for their long nightly journey. At the end of the night not only you will have been part of the journey of the most nomadic land mammal (they travel about 6,000 km per year, which is more than most other land mammals, and close to the distances covered by migratory birds and whales), but will have also learned ways to coexist with these magnificent heroes.

As part of the experience, you are welcome to bring a picnic blanket and some food to share with family and friends. Our Bats Qld expert will to tell you more about flying fox colonies and take you closer to one, in a way that is safe for you and respectful of the bats. You are also encouraged to bring an umbrella with you, to protect yourself from the elements.
